GC Update Vuelta a Espana 2025 Stage 9 | Jonas Vingegaard misses out on Red Jersey as Almeida & Pidcock lead charge of chasing pack

Stage 9 of the 2025 Vuelta a Espana has shaken up the GC standings like no one really expected. As the Red Jersey contenders came to the fore on a day some had earmarked for the breakaway, Jonas Vingegaard powered clear of his rivals to the stage win, but it wasn't quite enough for the Dane to regain the lead in the general classification.

Thanks to his second stage win of the race so far, the Team Visma | Lease a Bike leader ends the day still 2nd overall, but now just 37 seconds behind Torstein Traeen, who fought bravely on the final climb to limit his losses and do his best without any help from his Bahrain - Victorious teammates. Behind Vingegaard, we now also have the first impressions of who is leading the charge against the Dane. Tom Pidcock finished 2nd on the day, the clearest sign yet of his GC intentions and the Brit rises to 4th overall as a result, now 1:35 down on the race, but it's still Joao Almeida who sits closest to Vingegaard, 1:15 off red and just 38 seconds down on the Dane.

Felix Gall also had a strong day, rising five places in the GC to 5th overall at 2:14, whilst Giulio Ciccone, who perhaps paid dearly for his initial attempts to follow Vingegaard drops to 6th at 2:42. Lorenzo Fortunato (7th at 2:47), Matteo Jorgenson (8th at 2:49), Jai Hindley (9th at 2:53) and Giulio Pellizzari (10th at 2:53) complete the new top-10.
