The Giro del Veneto returns for its 88th edition this Wednesday, continuing its late-season role as one of the final showdowns on the Italian racing calendar. Slotted just after Il Lombardia and ahead of the Veneto Classic, the one-day race offers a platform for classics specialists, puncheurs, and opportunists looking to close out their season on a high. With a course that encourages aggressive racing and a field packed with talent, the 2025 edition is shaping up to be another dramatic chapter in this historic event.

This year’s route runs 161.2 kilometres from Vicenza to Verona, reversing the direction from last year's edition. While the terrain is far from alpine, it's no flat affair either. Riders will face around 1,500 metres of climbing, with the decisive section expected to come late in the day. Central to the finale are five ascents of the Salita delle Torricelle, a 4 km climb averaging 5% that’s no stranger to World Championship circuits. These repeated climbs are likely to thin the field and set the stage for a selective finish — favouring explosive climbers and riders with a fast kick on an uphill drag.

Recent editions have shown how varied the outcomes can be. In 2022, Matteo Trentin took a crafty win from a reduced breakaway, using his experience and sprinting nous to outfox rivals. Dorian Godon came out on top in 2023 in a sprint from a select group, capitalizing on a strong team performance. And just last year, Corbin Strong emerged victorious after an uphill drag to the line in Vicenza, underlining how this race rewards both tactical patience and late-race punch. With the parcours once again favouring those who can handle short climbs and still finish fast, all eyes now turn to the startlist — and there’s no shortage of firepower lining up.
