VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè's Enrico Zanoncello has sprinted to victory on stage 1 of the 2024 Giro d'Abruzzo after a thrilling bunch sprint finish that finished incredibly close and required a photo finish.
After six men had initially broken away, just three attackers remained out front as the race entered the final 40km, around 1:20 clear of what remained of the peloton. Despite the brave effort of the trio, they were reeled back by the peloton with just over 12km to go.
From there, despite a few lone attacks, a sprint finish was always inevitable. In the race for the line, it was an incredibly close finale with three riders crossing the line side-by-side. Enrico Zanoncello eventually was given the win after a photo finish ahead of Matteo Malucelli and Manuel Penalver.
