Egan Bernal looks to racing comeback: "I hope to do the races in Italy"

Egan Bernal's return to the peloton has been a highly anticipated topic since he's been able to miraculously recover from the crash that almost took his life back in January in Colombia, and the man himself as hinted towards when that can be.

He was said to possibly be returning to competition at the Vuelta a Burgos this coming month after joining the team in a training camp in Andorra, and reportedly having a higher training volume and quality. He didn't point towards that in the interview, however has hinted at a more realistic comeback to the peloton.

He told SqualoTV - a Twitch channel ran by Vincenzo Nibali - that “for the Vuelta, it’s almost certainly no, because it’s hard. I spoke with the team and my coach, and at the start, let’s say a month or two months ago, it was impossible to think about racing this year. But I hope to do the races in Italy, the final races of the season".

This would mean that the earliest, the Colombian is expecting to race the Italian Autumn classics, taking place from mid-September into the season finale in October. Having had his two first years as a pro in Androni Giocattoli, it would be a return to a familiar calendar - which he's also raced multiple times whilst at INEOS Grenadiers.
