After Lorena Wiebes conquered the women's title in the morning, the Dutch men's road race
national championships took place this Saturday afternoon and we have got a surprise as
Danny van Poppel overpowered some strong sprinters to take the Dutch jersey on his shoulders into the Tour de France.
The race ended in a bunch sprint and the field was perhaps superior to that of any other national championships when it came to the fast men. Riders like Casper van Uden and Marijn van den Berg had to settle for spots in the Top10 distant from the podium, but crossing the line first was Danny van Poppel who has won the race for the first time. He will not even be BORA's main sprinter for the Tour de France, but put in a masterful ride to beat Olav Kooij and Dylan Groenewegen and take the gold medal.
In France it was
Marie Le Net who took the victory and the new French title, as a result of a chaotic race where the main favourites were distanced from early on and a set of large groups was up the road for the majority of the day.
In Italy, despite a late mechanical that almost risked costing her the victory,
Elisa Longo Borghini managed to revalidate her title in Darfo Boario Terme. Monica Trinca Colonel and Eleonora Ciabocco completed the podium.
