Daniek Hengeveld holds off peloton to take solo breakaway success on stage 1 of 2025 Tour Down Under

CERATIZIT-WNT Pro Cycling Team's Daniek Hengeveld has sensationally opened the 2025 women's World Tour season with a stunning, solo breakaway stage win.
With a tough, challenging parcour taking the riders from Brighton to Snapper Point, Hengveld spent 50km on the attack, having a near three minute lead at one point. Despite the chase increasing in speed towards the finale and cutting the Dutchwoman's lead to just 36 seconds at the line, Hengveld held off the peloton to take the stage win ahead of Ally Wollaston and Kathrin Schweinberger, and moves into the lead of the Tour Down Under.
Elsewhere, Alyssa Polites holds the young rider's jersey and the Queen of the Mountains, marking a strong day for the Australian rider.

If MVDP was risk averse, he’d not have taken up cycling. Every person has their own natural risk level and can only feel relaxed living it and that’s an important part of not ending up frustrated which is a bigger danger to your safety than doing what you’re comfortable doing. Millions of people practice skiing at every different level without dying. If Schumacher had skied more regularly he might not have been so naïve about the increased risks he took. Crans-Montana is a real technical track, and he'll need plenty of prep beforehand; so lots of training & racing on the MTB.
