After an altitude camp in Etna, today Damiano Caruso has shown his strong form by winning the queen stage of the Giro di Sicilia in the very same mountain. Caruso has won half the stages in this race, and has taken a dominant win in the overall classification whilst racing for the Italian national team.
He started the final stage in second place after young Fran Miholjevi´c took over the race lead after yesterday's successful breakaway: “I feel very happy because in a certain sense I have made my dream come true. I had never raced in Sicily, and doing it now with the national team is something special. In fact, I want to thank my team, which allowed me to participate and the Federation which enabled me to do it in the best possible way. Personally, I did my best and prepared this appointment with the utmost commitment. Today we have reaped what we have sown," Caruso said in a post-race interview.
Early inside the final climb Caruso has shown his climbing prowess, and he never showed to be out of control whilst Vincenzo Nibali and Jefferson Alexander Cepeda dealt blows to try and go for the win. Caruso never truly made a piercing attack, but his acceleration inside the final kilometer was enough to drop his rivals and head onto a very special win.
"I knew the last climb very well and I knew that in the last two kilometers there were the steepest slopes. challenging. So I decided to wait, thinking that this was the right moment, where there were the hardest slopes, to try to win," he concluded.
Caruso will be back in Bahrain - Victorious colours in the coming weeks as he will be racing the Tour de Romandie. This summer he will be racing the Tour de France after a strong second place at last year's Giro d'Italia.
