The first case of Covid-19 within the Giro d'Italia has been identified, as EF Education-EasyPost's Jonathan Caicedo tested positive during a rest day control round of testing.
The team have reported that Caicedo "is showing no symptoms," however, the Ecuadorian has been forced to abandon and is now going through the quarantine measures so as to prevent the spread.
"He is in quarantine. Our other riders and staff returned negative PCR tests and will continue the Giro d’Italia," the team added. With a Giro that has so far been under the expectations, with both Magnus Cort Nielsen and Hugh Carthy struggling to be in contention for top results, and the rest of the team in a situation that doesn't look any better.
With the third week on a row there will be opportunities for the breakaways to succeed, in which Carthy is likely to be among the riders looking to create damage. Caicedo would've been an important rider when it came to supporting the team's mountain ambitions.
