Scary moment at the Tour de France: Florian Lipowitz suffered a heavy crash in the individual time trial of stage 16. The German hopeful missed a corner on the technically demanding descent, was catapulted over his bike, and slammed hard onto the asphalt.
After somersaulting, Lipowitz apparently landed with full force on his shoulder. The Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe rider initially remained lying on the road. How seriously he was injured was not immediately known after the accident.

Lipowitz was on a strong run

The crash is particularly bitter because Lipowitz had been delivering a strong time trial up to that point. At the first checkpoint, he was only two seconds behind the then-best time set by Mattias Skjelmose. He was also among the fastest riders on the Côte de Larringes.
In the general classification, Lipowitz is fighting for a top result in this Tour. The time trial was primarily meant to help him limit losses to specialists like Remco Evenepoel and defend his position in the standings.
Instead, his ride ended on the descent with a violent impact. The images initially raised serious concerns.

Concern for the German Tour star

While Remco Evenepoel and Tadej Pogacar continued to battle for the stage win, the sporting result faded into the background for Lipowitz. What matters now is whether the 25-year-old can continue and what consequences the crash will have for the rest of his Tour.
Further information about his condition was initially unavailable. This article will be updated as soon as there are any developments.
