Bahrain Victorious’
Antonio Tiberi pulled off a stunning
victory at the 2024
Tour de Luxembourg, overtaking
Mathieu van der Poel in a
dramatic finale to stage 5. As David Gaudu claimed the stage win, Tiberi's late
attack secured him the overall title.
Starting the day 10 seconds behind van der Poel in the
general classification, Tiberi launched a decisive move in the final moments of
the stage. Finishing fourth on the day, more than 20 seconds ahead of the
Dutchman, the 23-year-old Italian snatched the yellow jersey and sealed his
first stage race victory.
“When they told me at the finish line that I did it, I was
super happy!” Tiberi said via the Bahrain Victorious press release.
“This is my first stage race win and the first time wearing the yellow jersey.
I’m so happy. It’s been a fantastic week with great results. Everyone on the
team performed well, and we were really united. Luxembourg is a beautiful
place, and I truly enjoyed this week.”
Tiberi’s impressive form this season continues to build,
having already secured the young riders classification at the Giro d'Italia
earlier this year. Reflecting on his success, he added: “This victory boosts my
morale for the upcoming races, especially the Worlds and Il Lombardia.”
With this victory in Luxembourg, Tiberi will be one to watch
as the season heads into its final weeks, including the World Championships and
the prestigious Il Lombardia.
