Annemiek van Vleuten wins Giro d’Italia Donne for third time as Chiara Consonni secures final stage victory

The Giro d’Italia Donne was concluded on Sunday with its final stage. Chiara Consonni took the stage victory against Rachele Barbieri, who finished second.

Several attempts took place in the early phases of the final stage, but no breakaway emerged. After some time, Krista Doebel-Hickock and Alessia Vigilia managed to create a gap of over a minute. Doebel-Hickock and Vigilia were caught by the peloton four kilometers before the finish line. It was time for sprinters to do their part.

Elisa Balsamo, Charlotte Kool, and Lotte Kopecky were top contenders, but Chiara Consonni and Rachele Barbieri surprised everyone in the final kilometer of the race. Consonni narrowly won the stage while Barbieri had to satisfy herself with second place. Emma Norsgaard took the bronze. Annemiek van Vleuten won her third Giro d’Italia Donne after 2018 and 2019. She maintained her top position in GC since stage 4.
