The eighth stage of the Giro d'Italia Donne was won by Annemiek van Vleuten. She created a significant gap between the peloton on the last hill and won the stage.
Brodie Chapman (FDJ-Nouvelle Aquitaine-Futuroscope) was the first one to create a breakaway and managed to grab a nice gap. Kristen Faulkner (BikeExchange-Jayco) along with Koppenburg counterattack her and soon Faulkner was in lead .
Van Vleuten launched an attack at the start of the final climb. Garcia and Cavalli accompanied her. The three soon caught up to Faulkner. Van Vleuten accelerated her pace and pulled away from them. At the top of the climb, the gap had already grown to half a minute.
The Dutch rider lost control of her bike and fell four kilometers from the finish line, losing half a minute of her advantage. Despite this, she was able to win the stage. Cavalli finished second after one minute, while Elisa Longo Borghini finished third. Van Vleuten has held the overall lead in the GC since stage 4, and her win today has increased her advantage to nearly two minutes.
