Whilst Tom Pidcock has long been regarded as one of the most exciting talents in the peloton, time trialling has never really been a strength of the Brit. That said though, it's a discipline which Pidcock has been working hard on in search of improvement and shone through on stage 2 of the 2025 Giro d'Italia.
In the end, Pidcock finished the stage in 39th position, 43 seconds down on the stage winner and his former teammate at the INEOS Grenadiers - Joshua Tarling. "It was, uh, I think a pretty good time trial from me," Pidcock reflected happily in his post-stage interview with reporters after crossing the line, revealing he had already sensed the power of the Welshman earlier in the day. "I mean, yeah, 43 seconds to Josh — not too bad. The speed he came past me in the recon…"
Whilst the positivity was clear for Pidcock, the Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team leader did raise an important issue about the conditions of the roads in Albania. "It’s really slippery," notes the former Tour de France stage winner. "If we were somewhere else in Europe, it would be like it was raining today. The tarmac is really shiny and polished. So, yeah, a few people got caught out with that today. And yeah, it’s about just holding a smooth line through all the corners, trying to carry as much speed as possible."
And although Pidcock is keen to not put too much pressure on a potential GC challenge, the Brit is 20th overall after stage 2, still very much in the mix with the pre-race favourites. "Like I said before the race, I was just going to race full gas every day and yeah, — just enjoy it, you know?" Pidcock concludes. "I enjoyed that time trial. I enjoyed the warm-up, which sometimes — these days are super long and, yeah, not the most fun. But yeah, — I enjoyed that."
