50 years old and running - Óscar Sevilla has no intentions of retiring from pro cycling just yet

Óscar Sevilla will race on for at least one more season. The Spanish rider has used his 50th birthday to announce a contract extension with Team Medellín - EPM, the squad he has represented since 2017 and with which he will continue a professional career that began in 1998.
The Spanish climber will take on another year in the pro ranks more than 25 years after his debut. Sevilla thus sustains a trajectory that has spanned different eras and found a second sporting life in Colombia from 2011, after returning from a suspension linked to Operación Puerto.
The renewal will keep Sevilla tied for at least another year to Team Medellín-EPM. The Spaniard has become a key piece for the Colombian outfit in national and local races, where he continues to add experience despite the passing years.
His sporting longevity is striking considering he turned pro in 1998. Since then, Sevilla has built a palmarès with notable results in Grand Tours as well as in stage races and one-day events.
One of the biggest milestones of his career arrived at the 2001 Vuelta a España, where he finished second overall. He also won the general classification at the Vuelta a Asturias in 2006 and at La Route du Sud Cycliste - La Dépêche du Midi in 2007.
Oscar Sevilla is spending at least one more season in the peloton
Sevilla’s trajectory also includes victories across various international stage races. In 2009 he won the overall at the Vuelta a Chihuahua Internacional, while in 2017 he took the Vuelta a la Comunidad de Madrid. During his Colombian chapter, he captured the overall at the Vuelta a San Juan Internacional in 2018.
The Spaniard also boasts stage wins in races with deep tradition. In 1999 he claimed a stage at the Tour de Romandie and in 2007 he added another, this time at the Volta a Catalunya.
Those victories are joined by other wins such as the Memorial Galera - Ciudad de Armilla and the Trofeo Luis Ocaña, both in 2000, as well as the 2008 Commerce Bank Reading Classic.
Sevilla's last major triumph came at 47
Although Sevilla has not taken another international win since 2023, his career is far from over. That year, shortly after turning 47, the Spaniard won the overall at the Tour de Hainan, one of the standout results of the latest phase of his journey.
Now, freshly 50, Sevilla will continue racing with Team Medellín-EPM. His extension prolongs a career that began more than a quarter of a century ago and that second professional chapter he launched in Colombia in 2011.
