2024 Vuelta a Espana GC Update after stage 7: Primoz Roglic begins to cut into Ben O'Connor's advantage with bonus seconds

Few would have expected the kind of chaos that erupted on the roads during stage 7 at the 2024 Vuelta a Espana but as Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe really put the pressure on, the race was ripped open, before Wout van Aert sprinted to victory from a reduced bunch.

Whilst Van Aert is no general classification threat, the rest of the lead was mostly filled by those with GC ambitions. Red Jersey Ben O'Connor looked incredibly strong throughout as he marked potentially dangerous moves, as was 2nd overall Primoz Roglic, who started his quest to reclaim red by picking off a few bonus seconds at the top of the final climb. Joao Almeida also stayed safe, retaining his 3rd overall.

Florian Lipowitz started the day 4th overall after his breakaway escapades on stage 6. Perhaps feeling the affects however, the German talent drops down to 8th after being caught the wrong side of the decisive split, with Enric Mas, Cristian Rodriguez, Antonio Tiberi and Lennert van Eetvelt moving up one spot respectively as a result. Notably, Tiberi is also back in the White Jersey of Best Young Rider too.

Completing the top 10, Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team's plan-B, Felix Gall and the Lidl-Trek leader Mattias Skjelmose.
