Stage 2 of the 2024 Tour de France threatened to be the first real fight for the general classification with the daunting two climbs of San Luca. In the end, that double climb left Tadej Pogacar as the new yellow jersey despite Kévin Vauquelin's stage win. Remco Evenepoel is 2nd and Jonas Vingegaard, 3rd.
Although, as mentioned, the win came from the breakaway at the hands of Vauquelin, the gap to the peloton managed to close significantly with the two passes through San Luca. In the first one there was not much movement among the favourites, but it was in the second one where Pogacar launched an attack that only Jonas Vingegaard could follow, although he was later caught by a Remco Evenepoel and Richard Carapaz counter attack before the finish line.
As a result, the UAE Team Emirates star is the new yellow jersey of the race, followed by Evenepoel, 2nd, and Vingegaard, 3rd, all three with the same time. Behind, Carapaz is now 4th with the same time as the first three after joining the hunt for Pogacar and Vingegaard along with Evenepoel. Romain Bardet drops down to 5th place, already out of the lead. The DSM rider is 6 seconds behind the yellow. 6th is Maxim Van Gils, 21 seconds behind.
The 7th place is occupied by Egan Bernal, 21 seconds behind Tadej Pogacar. Actually, the rest of the Top 10 remains with the same disadvantage. Pello Bilbao is the best positioned Spaniard in the classification with his 8th position. Tom Pidcock is 9th and Giulio Ciccone completes the Top 10.
Outside the top 10, Carlos Rodríguez is 13th, also 21 seconds behind, as is Matteo Jorgenson, 14th, Juan Ayuso, 18th and Primoz Roglic, 19th.
