Pim Ronhaar returned empty-handed from the European Under-23 cyclocross. He was in a very favourable position before but saw his European title aspirations go up in smoke in the final lap.
Emiel Verstrynge worked hard to reduce 30 seconds gap and joined Ronhaar in the final lap, The race ended in a real thriller, and Verstrynge came out on top. Ronhaar was left empty-handed. "I thought I had the race well in hand. In the last half-lap, I decided to let Emiel come back. After all, the gap was getting really small, and Emiel was coming up fast. So it might have been better to let him come back, to then go all out on the last slant," he told WielerFlits.
Just before the finish line he also encountered a mechanical problem. "As I turned onto the cobbles, I wanted to push on to get back to him, but just at that moment, my shifting system changed. That was the end of the race. Thibau came over, and then another Italian. At that point, I was pretty much destroyed mentally. It's sour, but Emiel is definitely the deserved winner," described Ronhaar.
Ronhaar is obviously disappointed with the end result but accepts it. “In Namur, things can look completely different within half a lap. We saw that again today. It's sour, but so be it. I only rode for first place today,” concluded Ronhaar.
