Finishing fourth in Gavere on Boxing Day, Joris Nieuwenhuis was best of the rest behind the the Big 3 at the UCI World Cup.
This impressive result was made even more impressive by the fact the Baloise - Trek Lions rider badly damaged his finger early on in the race. Despite initial concerns about a broken bone however, it seems not to be the case and Nieuwenhuis will continue racing for the time being.
“In the first lap I rode with my hand on a pole,” Nieuwenhuis remembers in conversation with Wielerflits. “I immediately felt that something. Other than that, I didn't have much trouble afterwards. On Tuesday evening I had another photo taken and fortunately my finger turned out not to be broken. There was a crack in it.”
