Not even a broken nose could prevent Lucinda Brand from taking victory at the recent Dutch National Championships. After finishing 4th in Benidorm on Sunday, the Baloise - Trek Lions star was asked how she has celebrated her win.
"The repair of the fracture in my nose will take six weeks, so it is not gone yet," said Brand, who was self-admittedly not well-suited for course in Benidorm on Sunday as her compatriot, Fem van Empel took the win. "The only difference is that I can't wear sunglasses now, which was annoying at the beginning of the race. That means you're squinting all the time, but other than that it's actually not too bad how much it bothers me."
A former world champion and now a three-time Dutch National Champion, Brand has done it all in terms of women's cyclocross. Now 34 years old though, she's not wasting any time savouring her victories at the moment. Instead, continuing to focus on the next race and the next victory.
"You know, that's the strange thing about cycling. The next day you fly somewhere else and then the next thing is just around the corner," she explains. "Maybe I won't be able to really think about it until after my career. Of course, you try that now and I am proud of everything I achieve. It's not that I think it's all normal, but I think you're constantly so caught up in the moment that it's difficult to really look back on it. That's for later, I think."
