"I still have a lot to discover" - After more cyclocross glory, Fem van Empel announces initial plans for road season

With 18 wins added to her cyclocross palmares this winter, most recently her second World Championship title, Fem van Empel has an eye on improving her road skills also in the coming year.

“I will definitely be at the start of Gent Wevelgem and the Tour of Flanders," said the 21-year-old Dutchwoman, who rides for Team Visma | Lease a Bike, in conversation with Wielerflits following her dominant success at the World Championships in Tabor on Saturday. "It would be nice to be there in the finales. I still have a lot to discover on the road, especially in one-day races.”

On the road in 2023, van Empel was present at notable races such as the Giro d'Italia Donne and the Tour de Romandie Féminin, but was unable to claim her first victory in the discipline.

“I think I’ve grown mentally in addition to my physical abilities,” van Empel explained in an interview with Sporza. “At the beginning of the season I was insecure a few times, but it is a learning process. I can deal with it now. The people around me have a lot of faith in me. My mental coach has also given me tips that allow me to handle the pressure. And sometimes you have to learn by doing hard things.”
