Despite an incredible fightback, Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado wasn't quite able to take victory at the UCI World Cup in Hulst, having to settle for second behind Puck Pieterse.

“It was super tough, especially when you don't have a good start,” she admits in her post-race interview. “I think I started well, but there were some riders who went a bit faster. I got locked up. It was difficult to get out. That cost me a lot today, I think.”

Picking off riders like Fem van Empel and Lucinda Brand en route to the front of the race, Alvarado did regain contact with Pieterse on the final lap but given the immense effort taken to get there, she couldn't quite force herself onto the top step of the podium.

“When I came back, I took over straight away. I didn't want to give up. With Brand I had a good companion today. We raced against each other, but we also rode to get back at Puck. That made us get closer and closer,” she recalls. “I even got into the wheel, but I was exhausted. It was very tough today. When it's muddy, it's tough. But in these circumstances, it is also very difficult. There was no real recovery anywhere, you had to keep going. The battle among themselves also made it extra tough. We gave it everything and were dead at the end."
