Eli Iserbyt has triumphed at Superprestige Middelkerke after a thrilling conclusion saw the seemingly dominant Joris Nieuwenhuis completely fall away.
Similarly to in the women's race earlier in the day, the Dutch National Champion, powered away from the pack early on, Joris Nieuwenhuis the clear leader over the first few laps. With three laps in the bag, the Baloise - Trek Lions rider was already in the ascendancy by 30 seconds.
In a stunning turn of events however, Eli Iserbyt turned on the gas and accelerated hard to not only catchup with Nieuwenhuis but to go flying past and into the lead himself on the penultimate lap. As the Dutchman completely collapsed he was also caught by Michael Vanthourenhout and suddenly the podium was a risk for Nieuwenhuis. Although Nieuwenhuis stayed strong for third, the victory was Iserbyt's.
