Yentl Vandevelde surprises peloton to take breakaway win on stage 1 of the ZLM Tour

Yentl Vandevelde held off the raging peloton by mere seconds to take victory on stage 1 of the 2023 ZLM Tour.

In Zeeland, the peloton will face stage 1, in pan-flat and windy terrain. 190 meters of climbing in 202 kilometres, the finale into 's-Heerenhoek will see the first bunch sprint of the race.

Getting into the early breakaway was a group of seven riders although the peloton maintained a relatively tight leash for most of the stage.

Doing the majority of work on the front of the peloton was Jumbo-Visma, in aide of their sprinter Olav Kooij.

With 20km to go the leaders still had 1:23 advantage over the peloton.

That gap had barely moved over the following 10km with the gap remaining at 1:20 as they passed the 10km to go banner.

In the finale, it was Yentl Vandevelde who attacked from the break and he held off the peloton to take a brilliant win.
