Raul Garcia Pierna Movistar Ardenas
The 2026 cycling season is in the books as we look back on one of the most action-packed years in recent memory. Tadej Pogacar's Tour de France domination, his Vuelta a Espana crash heartbreak, Paul Seixas's meteoric rise and Jonas Vingegaard's Giro d'Italia glory all stick out.
However, what we don't remember as clearly are perhaps the riders who spent the most time in front of the cameras: the year's great breakaway protagonists. From opportunist attackers, to lone ventures at the front of the biggest races, several riders have lit up races with their attacking moves.
While most of the most of the moves don't end in glory, some eventually outlast a chasing peloton and prove to be among the most entertaining and important stories in cycling - seeing riders who would not normally win among the peloton get the chance to seize their big day.
As we look back on the year's most attacking riders on ProCyclingStats, we're focusing on just WorldTour races, painting the picture of those fighting at the biggest races. Starting right from the top spot, 2026's most attacking rider was part of no less than 14 breakaway bids at Grand Tours and 23 races in total throughout the season.

Raúl Garcia Pierna spends over 2600 kilometres on the attack

Movistar's Raúl Garcia Pierna was one of the busiest riders at the both the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana. While he did contribute to Enric Mas's phenomenal red jersey triumph, his pursuit of victory in breakaways saw him land seven top ten results and 2610 kilometres at the front of affairs.
Uno-X Mobility were also key in many of the season's top races, and they've got Andreas Leknessund and Tobias Johannessen in second and sixth place. Leknessund took a stage win at the Vuelta as well as several top tens throughout the season. Meanwhile, Johannessen too took Vuelta honours and multiple podium and top five finishes in another solid season.
Baptiste Veistroffer's Tour de France heroics see him amass 2119 kilometres at the front of big races, while Groupama-FDJ United duo Clément Braz Afonso and Guillaume Martin claim fourth and fifth after busy seasons.
Valentin Paret-Peintre's Tour King of the Mountains push sees him feature on the list, while Dries de Bondt also continues to be among the most prominent breakaway specialists in the bunch.
Rounding out the list, Movistar duo Pablo Castrillo and Einer Rubio were a near constant feature in mountain stage breakaways throughout the WorldTour calendar - spending over 1400 kilometres each at the front.
In a top twenty that featured the very best and most active breakaway specialists, the likes of Ben Healy, Quinn Simmons and Bruno Armirail all feature prominently.
