Nowadays it's rare for there to be a crash in an urban setting in pro cycling that isn't captured by spectators. On the first stage of this
Giro d'Italia there was a very meaningful fall in the final kilometers including
Mikel Landa, and almost a week later it is finally possible to see in detail how the Basque rider crashed.
In the Albanian capital of Tirana, the fall happened in a fast and technical descent. Whilst it was not the riders' first time down that road that day, the speed in which the riders went through captured the
Soudal - Quick-Step leader by surprise.
Although the video is rather blurry, it is possible to see very clearly that Landa's crash was not caused by any outside factor, but an excess of speed, which saw him be unable to avoid the sidewalk. His fall had large consequences - not only his withdrawal from the race, but a vertebrae fracture that may have potentially have ended his season already.
