A shocking win.
Mathieu van der Poel was very far from his best form at
Milano-Sanremo, but in the matter of a week he found his best legs to soar into a solo victory. His attack at the Poggio di Sanremo decided the race.
Tadej Pogacar made an early move on the climb which split the front group into only four riders. He was followed by van der Poel, Filippo Ganna and Wout van Aert. However the
Alpecin-Deceuninck rider was the only one with an extra gear, and with 5.6 kilometers he attacked just before the summit of the climb, and from there on built the winning gap.
