Victor Campenaerts satisfied how the breakaway fared on Critérium du Dauphiné stage 2: "We made the best of it"

Victor Campenaerts, along with six other riders, went for a breakaway action in stage 2 of Critérium du Dauphiné, hoping for a surprise, but it was not meant to be as Soudal - Quick-Step reeled the breakaway back and later went on to win with their leader - Julian Alaphilippe.

"I am very happy that I am racing from the front again and that I reach a good level. I had fun, but the peloton clearly had other ambitions than to let the early break go. Especially Soudal Quick-Step. Although it is clear that they made the right choice," he told Cycling Pro Net after the finish.

Campenaerts, however, looks back with satisfaction on his performance. "I had fun on the bike and had a good relationship with fellow escapee Kenny Elissonde. We made the best of it. I think I'll feel my legs tomorrow. It was a good training and I hope to be in the best shape possible soon."

The Lotto Dstny rider did not want to blow too high off the tower before the start of the Dauphiné. "Although I have to say that I already felt good the last few days at altitude training. I spent a month on the Sierra Nevada. But even then it is always the question of how the legs feel in competition. The level is always high at Dauphiné. Everyone wants to prove themselves with a view to the Tour de France. I am satisfied with the legs and satisfied that I can influence the race a little bit."
