Triathlon star Kristian Blummenfelt made waves in the cycling world last year, setting out his plan to switch sports and targeting a Maillot Jaune victory at the Tour de France within the next few years. As the 2025 World Tour season nears a start at the upcoming Tour Down Under though, the 30-year-old Norwegian has not been able to secure a cycling contract.

"We looked at the possibilities, but nothing was finalized," reveals Blummenfelt in an interview with TV2, stressing the fact that the ultimate to decision to not pursue a career in cycling and in the mountains of the Tour de France was his decision and not due to a lack of interest in his services. "It's hard to say in exact percentage, but we talked to some teams and got some offers. So it would have been possible."

Another notable factor in Blummenfelt's decision to withdraw from his Maillot Jaune aims, was the financial implications of switching to cycling. "Well, I have contracts with a bicycle brand that limit which teams I could ride for, so I had to stick to the contracts I had, the contracts with the longest binding period," says the 2021 Olympic champion. "I had to see everything in relation to the partners and contracts I have now, but at the same time, that's not what motivates me. If I had started a new project, it would have been the challenge itself that would have motivated me. But yes, that's not a problem anymore."

Because of all this, getting back to his best in the triathlon world is now the big goal of Blummenfelt. "I have to get back on my feet after the fiasco in 2024. It was a bad year. Paris was a mess, the Ironman World Championships were a mess, so I feel like I have more in me. I didn't want to end my triathlon career as badly as I did last year," he says.
