Uno-X Mobility's Tord Gudmestad has triumphed at the 2024 Veenendaal-Veenendaal Classic after a tough day in the saddle in the Dutch spring rain ahead of Simon Dehairs and Dylan Groenewegen.
Six riders formed the breakaway of the day, including a few notable riders too such as Team Visma | Lease a Bike's Bart Lemmen and Tudor Pro Cycling Team's Simon Pellaud. With 100km to go though, they'd only been allowed a gap of just 2:10 by the peloton.
After a long, hard day on the attack, the leaders' advantage over the peloton had slipped to just 12 seconds heading into the final 10 kilometres, with the catch looking imminent. The six leaders were refusing to give up without a fight and with 5km to go, they were still dangling out front, only around 8 seconds ahead of the peloton.
Finally though, inside the final 2km, the peloton completed the catch, with sprint trains taking over in preparation of the bunch finale. Team Jayco AlUla and Alpecin-Deceuninck were fighting for position at the front and as the sprinters launched it was an incredibly tight finish with three riders blanketed across the line. After a look at the replay, Tord Gudmestad was victorious ahead of Simon Dehairs and Dylan Groenewegen.
