"Today we knew it was a big opportunity" - Remco Evenepoel doesn't waste opportunity to win one final time in Mallorca

Remco Evenepoel opened his season with a victory at the Trofeo ses Salines' team time trial, and the next day dominated to win the Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana. Today he looked to be racing in support of Maxim van Gils, but as Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe didn't want to risk it, the Olympic Champion ended up racing to victory.

"Super happy, super nice to start the season like this and to finish my races in Mallorca. Happy with how everything went and now its time to look forward to the next races," Evenepoel said in a post-race interview. With two wins under his belt already in two days of individual racing, he will now set off as the main favourite to win the Volta a Comunitat Valenciana neext week.

Today Evenepoel looked to pace the group of climbers up the Coll du Puig Major still very far from the finish, which thinned down the peloton and saw Maxim van Gils attack two times. The tactic looked to be to set up the Belgian and try to help him win as well, but he did not have the legs to make the difference there.

Instead, after the climb, the decision was made to use the team's numbers to go on the attack, and obtain the victory by any means. Naturally the best chances would be on Evenepoel with a long-range attack, which is what he did.

He was followed by Mathys Rondel - and also Diego Pescador, however the Colombian couldn't stand the pace in the flat section of the race - and the duo rode into the final climb together. It didn't come as a surprise to see Evenepoel then make the difference and celebrate at the Mirador d'Es Colomer.

"I really wanted to take one victory that's for sure, today we knew it was a big opportunity [...] I'm very happy to take three victories - one with the team and two individual". It was a perfect week for Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe who can still take another triumph tomorrow at the Trofeo Palma, however this will be one for the sprinters.

"The first one (victory, ed.) is always the most nice one, the team time trial was really like a team effort and it's always a different kind of celebration. This one was very happy".
