The sad and poor Spanish participation in the Giro d'Italia 2023

The fact that there is only one Spanish WorldTour team limits the participation of national riders in some of the most important races in the world. This is the case in the Giro d'Italia, where there are only 7 teams.

There are four Spanish riders in the Giro d'Italia 2023. Three of them, José Joaquín Rojas, Óscar Rodríguez and Albert Torres; arrive mainly to work for Fernando Gaviria, whom they will have to protect so that he arrives with options in the volatas to get a stage victory.

We imagine that Carlos Verona will have the opportunity to shine that when he has to be Enric Mas's gregario he doesn't have. He hasn't raced too much at the beginning of the campaign, so he could arrive with good legs for the very hard last week to try for a partial victory in a breakaway.

Little to scratch outside Movistar Team. Veteran Jonathan Lastra will be a gregario in a weak Cofidis and Diego Pablo Sevilla (EOLO-KOMETA) will try to sneak into a breakaway. Finally, Luis León Sánchez, who will be one of the mainstays of an Astaná that will try to win with Mark Cavendish in the sprint. The Spaniard came close to winning a stage in the last Tour de France and, if he is in good shape, why not dream of one in the 2023 Giro d'Italia;

And that's all. None of the great Spanish cyclists in the international peloton have decided to go for the Giro. Two traditional ones like Mikel Landa and Pello Bilbao have preferred the Tour de France this year because it starts from the Basque Country. We'll see what the 7 can scrape in a very complicated corsa rosa, full of kilometers against the clock and beastly mountain stages. It won't be easy for them.
