Tadej Pogacar, Paul Seixas, Remco Evenepoel
On the weekend of the 26th of April, the riders will be on the roads of western Belgium for the fourth monument of the year, which is also the last of the Ardennes and the spring classics entirely. It is Liège-Bastogne-Liège, a race designed for the puncheurs and climbers to fight for a highly prestigious victory. We take a look at its startlist.
The race was created in 1892, hence why it's called La Doyenne - The oldest. Léon Houa won its first three editions, and then the race took two extensive break periods - the second of which due to World War I. It is a race that has also been won by some of Belgium's very best, such as Rik van Looy, Eddy Merckx, Roger de Vlaeminck, Philippe Gilbert and Remco Evenepoel.
Within this century, others such as Alejandro Valverde, Andy Schleck and Primoz Roglic have also won. It used to be an open race, currently less so. The past two editions have been won by Tadej Pogacar, taking uncontested solo wins with attacks on La Redoute.
Download the startlist in A4. The race is headlined by defending champion Tadej Pogacar who comes in seek of another monument win, and to prove he is still ahead of the game against a new batch of competitors.
One is Remco Evenepoel who leads Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe and is joined by Jai Hindley and Daniel Martínez; and the other is Decathlon CMA CGM Team leader Paul Seixas who is cycling's new mega-talent and is the man many believe to be Pogacar's successor. They have won Amstel Gold Race and La Flèche Wallonne respectively.
A few men come over from the Tour of the Alps including Tom Pidcock, second to Pogacar at Milano-Sanremo, who comes from a stage win and leads Pinarello - Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team. We have Kévin Vauquelin leading INEOS Grenadiers; Julian Alaphilippe for Tudor Pro Cycling Team; Alex Baudin (EF Education-EasyPost); Romain Grégoire for Groupama - FDJ United and Lenny Martínez leading Bahrain - Victorious as fellow Frenchmen who have got either history or a lot of quality to tackle this race.
Tobias Johannessen comes as the head of Uno-X Mobility; Lidl-Trek have last year's second place Giulio Ciccone, Mattias Skjelmose and American champion Quinn Simmons; Podium finishers at the Flèche Wallonne Mauro Schmid (Team Jayco AlUla) and Ben Tulett (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) also lead their respective teams. Furthermore we have Christian Scaroni (XDS Astana Team); Cian Uijtdebroeks (Movistar Team) and Ion Izagirre (Cofidis) are also at the start.
