Simon Yates abandons mixed Giro d'Italia

Simon Yates has abandoned the Giro d'Italia during the 17th stage of the race. The Team BikeExchange - Jayco rider experienced a roller-coaster of emotions throughout almost three weeks, but has called it a day.

Yates came into the Giro as one of the main contenders for the overall win, and won the initial time-trial in Budapest showing the strong form he came into the race. Throughout the first week he looked consistent, until the stage to Blockhaus completely imploded his ambitions as he cracked and lost over 10 minutes in the final ascent.

He bounced back however to take a very strong win in Torino as BORA - hansgrohe tried to raid the race, and was under impression that his possible knee injuries had been overcame. However his form was very inconsistent and he left the race after a couple of stages where he's failed to perform at his best level.
