Simon Carr gave EF Education-EasyPost a stage win on the final stage of the 2023 Tour of the Alps. The expected general classification battle never really took place however with INEOS Grenadiers Tao Geoghegan Hart taking the overall race win.
The final stage of the 2023 Tour of the Alps saw a very strong group of 23 riders finally get ahead up the road after an earlier attempt of a breakaway had been brought back by the INEOS Grenadiers. The group included riders such as Gianluca Brambilla, Luis León Sánchez, Geoffrey Bouchard and Edoardo Zambanini.
With Israel - Premier Tech riding on the front of the peloton as the race came towards the final climb of the day, Simon Carr attacked at the front of the race as the breakaway began breaking up.
Movistar's Ivan Sosa also attacked off the front of the peloton, nearly four minutes down the road, although INEOS Grenadiers and race leader Tao Geoghegan Hart had little reason to be concerned just yet.
With Carr having a minutes lead over his nearest rival at the top of the climb it was now down to a solo time trial for the final 17kms to the line.
With the big general classification battle seemingly not coming, Carr was actually putting time into the peloton as he rode towards victory.
Following Carr's victory, teammate Georg Steinhauser was best of the rest to secure EF a one-two finish on the final stage with Matteo Fabbro coming home in third.
With the peloton rolling over the line with no real fight taking place, Geoghegan Hart and INEOS were allowed a comfortable ride to secure the overall race win that puts an impressive marker down prior to the upcoming Giro d'Italia.
