Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe's Roger Adria has taken a gruelling win at GP de Wallonie 2024, outsprinting compatriot Alex Aranburu in a brutal finale.
Six riders forced their way into the day's breakaway. With just over 40km to go though, the leaders were joined by a counter attack, that included some of the pre-race favourites such as Arnaud De Lie, Biniam Girmay, Quinten Hermans and Jake Stewart among others, with the 20+ group having a narrow advantage over the peloton heading into the final 35km. Given the danger of the move, the team's that had missed out didn't offer much leeway and the move was soon cancelled out.
Following the catch, a few riders tried their luck with attacks before the finale and with 7km to go, the duo of Georg Zimmermann and Mads Würtz Schmidt had built up 40 seconds lead. As they passed through the 2km to go banner, leaders still had 16 seconds and victory was very much hanging in the balance as Zimmermann moved clear solo. Despite the German's best efforts though, he was caught inside the final kilometre. In the subsequent sprint for the victory, glory went to Roger Adria at the throw ahead of Alex Aranburu.
