Stage 4 of the Vuelta a Burgos has been won by Matthew Brennan. The Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider was the main favourite to take the glory on the day, but had a difficult task to bring the win in what was a chaotic sprint.
The fourth day of racing was the one best suited to the sprinters, presenting 178 kilometers between Palazuelo de Muñó and Briviesca. Most of the stage was flat, with a few rolling hills towards the finale and a clear favourite: Stage 1 winner Matthew Brennan.
Javier Ibañez, Nil Aguilera and Josh Burnett formed the day's breakaway, a modest group that tried to take the opportunity and surprise. It was a difficult task however with only three men against a peloton that would have its sole bunch sprint of the week, and plenty riders looking to make worth of their trip to Spain.
The catch of Ibañez, the last survivor of the front group, was made with 16 kilometers to go. A bunch sprint was inevitable as the riders arrived to town, without any defined leadout taking to the front with 1 kilometer to go.
Owain Doull for Visma and Yevgeniy Fedorov for Astana took the front already in the final kilometer, trying to set up their leaders. Marius Mayrhofer launched an early trying to surprise the competition.
Matthew Brennan sprinted to victory on the fourth day of the race, although this could only be confirmed after the finish, taking into consideration the proximity of the first riders at the finish line. He beat Laurence Pithie and David González to the line.
