Stage 1 of the
Boucles de la Mayenne followed the early prologue, and saw the sprinters go head to head to fight for a stage win. It was
Olav Kooij who came out victorious, in his very first bunch sprint of the year.
The first stage of the race finished in Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne with a flat profile that didn't allow for many surprises. Baptiste Veistroffer was in the day's breakaway and the Lotto breakaway specialist gave the peloton a headache with a late attack that was only caught with 12 kilometers to go.
The finale could see many big sprinters take the win, with Mads Pedersen, Juan Sebastián Molano and Matthew Brennan all present as well as contenders. But none made it onto the podium in a tight sprint where Olav Kooij was victorious.
The Dutchman only began his season this week after a prolonged injury, but has immediately left a good impression in his very first opportunity. He beat Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe's Alessio Magagnotti and Anthony Turgis to the lin. Julius Johansen remains in the race lead as he arrived safely in the peloton.
