2024 has been a real breakthrough season for Remco Evenepoel. Although he was already a world champion and Vuelta a Espana winner, the Belgian kicked on again this year, taking a historic Olympic double and finishing on the podium of his first Tour de France. Now though, it's time for a well deserved rest.
With no cyclocross on the Soudal - Quick-Step leader's winter programme, Evenepoel is allowed the freedom to completely switch off from the cycling world. And, thanks to a post on the official Instagram story of his wife Oumi, it's now known where the current time trial world champion is going to recharge his batteries.
“Back to Marrakech soon,” writes Oumi on her Instagram story. “It will be the first time for hubby Remco. Happy and nervous to show him my roots. If you have any tips for Marrakech, post them below.”
Evenepoel has previously been the victim of some rather repulsive criticism in Belgium for his relationship with the Moroccan, Oumi. "When they first got together, we often got the reaction: 'Oh, a Moroccan?' And it quickly went much further: 'Let him move to Morocco.' We also received anonymous letters full of curses in letters cut out of the newspaper," Patrick Evenepoel (Remco's father ed.) recalled sadly in a past interview with Humo. "Also when they got married and posted a photo in traditional Moroccan clothing, there were negative comments."
