PREVIEW | Clàsica Comunitat Valenciana 2023 - European season starts with hilly classic

On the 22nd of January 2022 the European season will start! It will be in Valencia, eastern Spain, where the riders will have their first taste of professional road racing and it's the Clàsica Comunitat Valenciana that will kick things off.

The race will feature 189 kilometers. Whilst last year it saw a course suited to the pure sprinters, this year it should be a mix of sprinters and classics riders splitting the tabs. With 27 kilometers the riders will climb a small hilltop of 2.2 kilometers at 7.4%, in what is a long and inconsistent climb into the final kilometers.

Valencia - La Nucia, 189 kilometers
Valencia - La Nucia, 189 kilometers

However the finale into La Nucia itself will be far from easy, rather quite explosive. With 6 kilometers to go the riders will climb a whole kilometer at 5.7% average gradient, and after a short descent they will then ride 2.1 kilometers at 4.3% which ends at just two kilometers to go. The road flattens, however there will be no restbite whatsoever before a slow drag into the finish line.
