Portugal's track Olympic champion heavily awarded after brilliant 2024

Iúri Leitão was the star of the 28th Portuguese Sports Confederation Gala, held at the Maria Matos Theatre in Lisbon, as he picked up three prestigious awards for his sporting performance in 2024.

Iuri Leitão was voted Male Athlete of the Year, ahead of renowned national figures such as Cristiano Ronaldo (football), Neemias Queta (NBA), Diogo Ribeiro (swimming) and Nuno Borges (tennis).

The national team cyclist and Caja Rural - Seguros RGA rider also won the Team Award, together with Rui Oliveira, for winning the gold medal in the Madison race at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. It was a historic achievement for Portuguese cycling, and one that consecrated the pair on one of the most prestigious stages in world sport.

"I wish I had Rui here with me, so that he could also say what he feels, but without a doubt, we're extremely proud to receive this award," said Vianense in his speech.

At the end of the evening, he was also awarded the Ethics in Sport Prize, for his gesture of great sportsmanship during the Olympic final of the Omnium, when he waited for Benjamin Thomas after he fell, before going for gold. A moment that symbolizes the essence of sport and that moved the cycling world.

"I don't know if I've already said goodnight to you," joked Leitão as he took to the stage, before thanking "the best coach in the world, Gabriel Mendes", in a heartfelt tribute to the national track team.

With this triple recognition, Iúri Leitão consolidates his status as one of the leading figures in Portuguese sport, standing out not only for his sporting achievements, but also for the values of respect, humility and team spirit that he has shown. His career confirms him as a true ambassador for national cycling.
