Having been forced to abandon the first Grand Tour of his career at last year’s Vuelta a España after suffering a broken collarbone in a crash on stage 2, Oscar Onley managed to recover enough to compete in Il Lombardia and the Tour of Guangxi at the end of the 2023 season.
He then began his 2024 campaign by taking his first professional win on stage 5 of the Tour Down Under, as well as finishing fourth overall. However, a crash at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race saw him break his collarbone once again.
He made his comeback Gran Premio Miguel Indurain, where he finished in third place behind Brandon McNulty and Maxim Van Gils. He then went to Itzulia Basque Country, finishing fifth on the final stage around Eibar after being in the breakaway for most of the stage.
However, misfortune struck Onley once again in his first Spring Classic of the season at the Amstel Gold Race, as he suffered a crash and was forced to abandon the race with yet another broken collarbone.
With another period of recovery now required, the effect that injuries have had on Onley’s season is clear to see in what could have been a breakout year for the young British rider from dsm-firmenich PostNL.
