João Almeida has officially abandoned the 2025
Tour de France. The Portuguese star had been expected to be the key lieutenant of
Tadej Pogacar in the high mountains, but the lingering effects of a stage 7 crash has ultimately ended Almeida's race midway through stage 9.
Almeida crashed hard with 6km to go on stage 7 last Friday, with the resultant injuries including fractured ribs. After bravely battling on for a couple of days, the effects have now taken their toll to the extent that Almeida has been forced to abandon. Potentially a big blow to Pogacar when the big mountains arrive later in the race.
Best wishes to Almeida from all associated at CyclingUpToDate.
