Jasper Philipsen was the sole rider to abandon the Tour de France on stage 3 and it was perhaps the big story of the day. The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider was the victim of a crash right before the stage's intermediate sprint, and was forced to withdraw whilst wearing the green jersey. The Belgian team has confirmed multiple fractures for the sprinter.
In the midst of the battle for positioning ahead of the intermediate sprint, there was a touch of wheels between Laurenz Rex and Bryan Coquard, which led to the fall of Philipsen at high speed. It quickly looked apparent that the injuries were meaningful and that the Belgian wouldn't be able to continue the race.
This was confirmed within minutes, with a suspected collarbone fracture. Reports suggesting he was being given oxygen after the fall also suggested he may have suffered a fractured rib, and Alpecin confirmed both scenarios.
"Preliminary diagnosis for Jasper Philipsen following his crash in Stage 3 of Le Tour. "Displaced fracture of the right collarbone, surgery will definitely be required," the team shared on social media. "At least one broken rib, possibly two. He will be as soon as possible transferred to the hospital in Herentals, where he will undergo surgery. We wish Jasper all the best and a speedy recovery".
