Miguel Ángel López has a dramatic history in his recent Grand Tour attempts, however he comes to the
Giro d'Italia as one of the main favourites, facing a mountain-filled route that is favorabele to his skillset as a rider.
Talking to reporters before the race, he confirms that the preparation for the race has been good. “The Tour of the Alps was the final test and my stage win was the best possible result for the Giro d'Italia. We have worked hard to be in top form here. I can also say that I am in the best possible shape.” López confidently said.
In the recent Tour of the Alps, López did not focus on the overall classification, letting it go on the second stage after going on the day's breakaway. However, he confirmed his good form by attacking two days later from the GC group, and taking a stage win in Kals am Grossglockner. Eyeing the Giro, that result came as a motivating factor for the Colombian.
“The Giro is my main goal this season. I am optimistic. I think I can get a good result in the general classification, but also win a stage," he concluded. He finished the opening stage inside the peloton and remained safe in the tense finale which saw little splits arise.
