Maxim Van Gils sprinted to seventh place on the Via Roma in Milano-Sanremo. After impressive start to the season Andalucia TT win and podiums at Strade Bianche and Faun Drome Classic, this is yet another nice result in the 24-year-old's palmares. The young Belgian speaks afterwards about mixed feelings.
Van Gils started the interview with Sporza with a smile. "I had predicted top 5 or top 10. Seventh, that's perfectly in the middle, isn't it." Yet there was more than a smile with Lotto Dstny's talent. "I may never be in as good a position as I am today."
"Milano-Sanremo is a really strange race," he explained. "Now everything stayed together and there were still fast men, then it became difficult. Still, you hope that everything will go well at the end and that you can play for the surprise. Only they were really pure sprinters today."
All in all, Van Gils is satisfied with his day. "I actually think this is a very nice race. Very relaxed at the beginning, but suddenly it becomes hard. Will I ever return to win? Of course," he concluded.
