The Danish climbers have had a terrible Paris-Nice. Jonas Vingegaard was forced to abandon the race after a fall on stage 5 which had him suffer a hand injury. A few days later, Mattias Skjelmose climbed onto the podium, but he too has now left the race after a shocking crash.

With 50 kilometers to go the peloton, on a simple road, came across a piece of non-signalled road furniture which didn't seem too threatening but saw the riders at the front of the peloton split. There were warning signs to those behind, but that came too late for Mattias Skjelmose who was close to the head of the peloton and crashed, hitting his head on the ground very hard. The withdrawal from the race has been confirmed a few minutes after as he was unable to get up.

Another completely useless piece of road furniture strikes again.
