Jumbo Visma rider
Marianne Vos seized second place in the first stage of the
Tour de France Femmes on Sunday. She narrowly lost the stage victory to
Lorena Wiebes.
"I was in a good position and came up next to Wiebes in the last bend. Then you know it will be a nice duel," Vos told Sporza. Vos was leading the sprint in the last kilometer, but Wiebes overtook her in the last few meters. "The team did a fantastic job of keeping me in front and out of trouble. Then you are already happy that you are in that spot. I tried to get a gap on the other side of the road, out of Lorena's wake, but unfortunately, I couldn't catch her," said Vos.
Although she did not win, she was happy seeing how far women’s cycling has come with the number of spectators almost comparable to men’s cycling. "It's the whole race. It's about your position because everyone wants to be at the front. It's much more about the fight for it. With all the spectators here, it's beautiful. It's a very nice day," concluded Vos. She holds the second position in GC, 4 seconds behind overall leader Lorena Wiebes.
