Marianne Vos lost the World Championships to Annemiek Van Vleuten on Saturday. She was leading the race till Mount Pleasant, but everything changed in the final eight kilometres, and Van Vleuten secured the title.
Vos, however, had no complaints about the loss. Instead, she was happy for her compatriot and even got emotional after the race, "No one could have imagined this," Vos told NOS."It was survival at the end."
She continues, "Ellen van Dijk and Annemiek really did a fantastic job for me. I was with Ellen in a third group, but we didn't come back. From my position, I did see that the second group could join the leaders. I could kind of see from afar that something orange was riding away.”
It is an amazing feat in itself for Van Vleuten to ride with a broken elbow, but to win the race takes it to another level, and Vos couldn't help but be impressed with her dedication. “Annemiek just doesn't break. It's incredible but incredibly deserved against all odds. She just does it. Annemiek is Annemiek,” concluded Vos.
