After the success of the recent Netflix documentary, Tour de France organisers are keen to make the race more and more open and accessible to fans. One way in which they are keen to do so is through the broadcasting of team radio.
One person who is not a fan of this proposal however, is Groupama - FDJ boss, Marc Madiot. "Can you imagine we’d reveal our conversations on TV?" Madiot exclaims in disbelief to Ouest-France. "Do you really conceive a TV camera being allowed to film a football team trainer giving his players their half-time instructions.”
This wouldn't be unheard of for a sport to broadcast team radio. As seen in the likes of Formula 1, where throughout the race, snippets of conversations between drivers and team bosses are played on the TV, where the viewing audience can listen.
"We have nothing to hide, so we’re ok with this,” says TotalEnergies Jean-René Bernadeau with his sports director Benoît Génauzeau agreeing. “That forms part of the evolution of our sport, and I don’t think this will give away any secrets. It will be screened, I can work with this.”
