The women's UAE Tour today delivered a stage like we rarely see. The extremely strong winds have caused absolute chaos in the race, and Elisa Longo Borghini has taken an immense amount of time on her rivals which brings her to a very good position to win the race overall. However, despite the chaos, the stage win was still taken by Lorena Wiebes.
In the desert this often happens and today was a prime example. The crosswinds blew the peloton apart to several groups all throughout the day, and in the end only a group of five riders made it to the finish within a shot of the win. UAE Team ADQ did a brilliant work to cement the gaps for Longo Borghini, who despite the favourable situation, missed out on bonifications - although that shouldn't be much of a concern.
Lorena Wiebes sprinted to victory beating Lily Williams who survived in the midst of the attacks, whilst Lara Gillespie finished third on the day. Tomorrow the riders end the stage atop Jebel Hafeet where the overall classification should be decided.
